Expanding Horizons Grants

Through the efforts of Assemblyman William Magnarelli, the STA is offering the Expanding Horizon Grants program. The awards are designed to help our members supplement the funding of field trips that will expand the cultural horizons of SCSD students. Please read the criteria below before filling out and submitting an application. For questions or help with the form, call us at 472-6374.

 

Assemblyman William Magnarelli has designated grant money to a new 501-c 3 fund established through the Syracuse Teachers Association. Expanding Horizons Grants [EHG] from this fund are awarded to Syracuse City School District teachers to enrich the cultural experiences of their students.    These funds are meant to supplement other funding sources, not be the sole source of support for the experiences. Your application should name your additional sources. You need to demonstrate the effort made to raise a substantial portion of the needed funds.    

Preference will be given to applications which focus on [but are not limited to]:

  • Cultural Events - plays, concerts, lectures, author/artist visits, museum/MOST exhibits, and culinary experiences.
  • Learning Activities - fossil hunting, hands on original documentation, crafts creation, and orienteering.
  • Community Experiences - programs that will enable students to benefit from a broader community.
  • Summer Enrichment - activities that lead to a better understanding of diverse educational and cultural perspectives,

Applicants should present financial statements showing substantial funds from other sources besides this grant. The maximum award is 50% of overall cost, not to exceed $1,000.   Funds from EHG will be generated in the form of a check in the name of the vendor when your SCSD Field Trip And Transportation Request Packet   has been approved and STA has been notified of this approval.

Make your application for this grant after you have completed the SCSD required packet and have received your principal's signature on the grant form.

Grant applications will be reviewed bi-weekly. Allow a minimum of 20 WORKING DAYS for the entire day trip process [time needed for grant application and school district field trip packet approval]. Grant applications for Overnight and Out-of-Country trips will require a minimum of 10 WORKING DAYS in addition to the district time line found in the SCSD field trip packet..

Expanding Horizons Grants Update

As with home budgeting, the price of gas / diesel is creating a problem for field trips.   With that in mind, in order to maximize our funds and increase the number of students who can participate in cultural experiences, the Expanding Horizons Grants committee will only consider applications for Central New York destinations.   We regret the necessity to do this.

We continue to receive applications without itemized budgets.   Itemized means listing the exact cost of expenses.   For example:

63 students x $2.00 per ticket =
$260.00
2 buses x $132 each =
$264.00
13 pairs of snowshoes to replace damaged pairs x $16.50 =
$214.50
Total budget     =
$604.50
 
Funds raised (bake sales, candy sales, $3.00 per student) =
$423.25

Please be sure to include with your application an itemized budget and a copy of the SCSD Field Trip Permission forms.   DO NOT CHECK "Grant funds" in the packet.   You should check "School Funds" and write STA Expanding Horizons Grants.
